Kate Hudson has joined the cast Who else is in?
According to Screen Daily, Kate Hudson, Elias Koteas (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Bill Pullman (Independence Day) and Ned Beatty (Superman II) have all joined the cast of The Killer Inside Me.
Michael Winterbottom will direct the adaptation of the Jim Thompson noir novel, which stars Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba.
The film is set in 1952, and follows Lou Ford, who is a young deputy sheriff in Texas. While Ford seems to be a harmless fellow, his placid exterior is only a mask for bloodlust that he thought was locked away long ago.

So what we’re getting is a remake of the 1976 version which starred Stacy Keach, Susan Tyrell, Keenan Wynn and everyone’s favorite Charles McGraw. In that this just happens to be my favorite book from Thompson I can only hope they do a better job than the last time. Of course other than the Maltese Falcon finally coming out right the third time around, we all know as a rule remakes pretty much stink up the joint.

I am skeptical, but maybe Affleck playing characters named Ford is a good omen. He seems to be very good at pulling off brooding psychotic.
Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson, hmm...but Bill Pullman and Ned Beatty sound very promising.

I'm not sure I'd call it a remake since it's more of a redo of the book. I am concerned with young Affleck playing a tough guy. For all the faults of the first attempt Keach was actually perfect casting. I have high hopes for this one.

| Did you see The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford?.
I think Affleck can pull off a psychopath very well. I never paid any attention to him before the Jesse James movie, and I was really impressed by him.

Susan Tyrrell and Keach were also in Fat City together...

I really want to get excited about this film (KIOM)....I usually enjoy Winterbottom's films (24 Hour Party People, Jude).

wow... Here's the trailer for The Killer Inside of Me.
A few warnings: This is NOT SAFE FOR WORK. It has sex and violence to women. If you don't wanna see that kind of stuff don't watch. It also gives away a lot of the plot if you haven't read the book. But I have to say it looks promising.

Wow. I was very enthused when I heard Casey Affleck was doing this film, because I think he is perfect for the role ... and the trailer confirms it. But I will NEVER understand, in a million years, why filmmakers allow the companies that distribute and promote films to reveal basically ALL the major plot points in the "trailer." I don't even know what this is -- it's certainly not a theatrical trailer at more than five minutes. Is it just for the internet? Is there no discretion when creating these things? The one for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN was terrific because it was exciting without revealing any of the story beyond the premise. Frankly, I hope this thing gets pulled, if only for the sake of those who haven't read the novel.
Affleck was great in ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES, which was a very underrated film. A study of America's first celebrity stalker.

What remains to be seen is if they use a Ford's internal voiceover. Without it, I wonder what real value the film would have. Thompson's genius was to put the reader directly inside the head of sociopath who has no trouble justifying his killings. It's a totally subjective, not objective, experience. If they don't capture that, then the film will be wide open for criticism that it's just "mindless" violence. Did you ever see Gaspar Noe's I STAND ALONE ... that was the best adaptation of Thompson I've ever seen, and it wasn't even based on one of his books. But it depicted the wild split narration Thompson used at the end of A HELL OF A WOMAN and Noe got it perfectly. It might have been the most repellant movie ever made ... until Noe made IRREVERSIBLE.

I recently watched Sam Fuller's I SHOT JESSE JAMES (1949), with John Ireland as Bob Ford, Criterion's Auteurs site is offering it for viewing for free, I highly recommend it. A very dark, absorbing film, Ireland's a favorite of mine, very underrated (see him with Mercedes McCambridge in THE SCARF). Also, Hulu offers , for free, THE OUTCASTS OF POKER FLATS (1952). In Spencer Selby's "Dark City: The Film Noir" you'll find it on page 201, Appendix A, under the category "OFF-GENRE FILM NOIRS, Western". I think it's very good, but you be the judge. I make it a point to cover ALL the bases.

Eddie: Your comment did remind me that I felt more than a bit uncomfortable reading Killer Inside of Me. Being in his head is not a fun place to be. Thompson was amazing.
No, I've never seen I Stand Alone.. it does look very grim. I thought I'd seen all the movies based on Thompson's work.

I STAND ALONE is not based on a Thompson book. I cited it because to me it's a contemporary film that attempted to do, onscreen, what Thompson did in KILLER INSIDE ME and POP. 1280, which is to make the reader/audience experience the killer's psyche subjectively ... sort of what David Lynch does, more dreamily, in LOST HIGHWAY and MULHOLLAND DR. You know, there once was a rumor that KILLER INSIDE ME was going to be made by Lynch, with Viggo Mortensen as Lou Ford.
