Noircon April 3 to April 6 2008

Hi OOTP and Back Alley Noir Fans:
Clute and Edwards have been named official podcasters for Noircon 2008, to be held starting this Thursday in Philadelphia, PA. If anyone is within driving distance of Philadelphia, we definitely suggest trying to make this unique conference dedicated to all things noir. Find out more at noircon.com.
But if you can't make it, Clute and Edwards are posting podcasts every night from the conference. We will be interviewing film makers, writers, producers, noir fans and conference attendees, and making those conversations available as part of our April Out of the Past Podcasts.
Please spread the word about the Noircon Podcasts to anyone interested in noir, because Shannon and I are excited about this unique opportunity to cover the conference, and make our interviews from the conference available to noir aficionados the same day!
Because of the time involved in putting together our podcasts at Noircon, there will be no new OOTP film dicussion in April. We will be back at our regular mics in May, for the great neo-noir Memento, and the summer will see a great slate of classic films that will satisfy hardcore noir fans.
Best, Rich Edwards Co-Host, Out of the Past Podcast

They're airing Blast of Silence there too.
If you plan on going, check out the Noir of the Week on Blast of Silence! Hopefully Clute and Edwards do a podcast on it...

edit: I have a feeling the review didn't get much attention last week. Mike will be introducing the film at Noir Con too!

I'm wondering if they're airing Blast of Silence in widescreen at Noir Con. The DVD is in full screen which actually annoys me... it should be in the aspect it was when it aired in theaters in 1961...
A quote from DVD Savant:
Quote:| Criterion's DVD of Blast of Silence is a fine presentation of a rare picture that we'd frankly expect to see released by a gray market seller. That it's here at all is a gift, but the transfer is a bit questionable. We're told that 1.33:1 is its original aspect ratio, but by 1961 one expects all U.S. releases to be at widescreen, at least 1:66. The full frame compositions look both loose and shapeless, and sure enough, when matted off on a widescreen monitor everything is framed handsomely. (see still mock-ups above) The text blocks in the title sequence crop perfectly at 1:78, so Savant's going to go out on a limb and say that Criterion's OAR is really someone's opinion (perhaps Baron's) of how the film should be shown on video. |

I've seen a couple of sources that say the film was originally 1.66:1
The copy I have, which I suspect is like everyone else's copy is 1.33:1

Clute and Edwards did some interesting podcasts from NoirCon in Philadelphia.
I'm listening today while I'm farting around this rainy Monday.
Edit: They mention our site! Very cool.
(their site is down right now...)

Dear Shannon & Richard, Listened to your "Cybernoir" cast today and (as much as I enjoy your OOTP & Black Mask casts) this is one of the very best things you`ve done. (Not least because - "The Killers" reference aside - we`ve FINALLY gotten to see what the front of your heads look like - which shouldn`t be important but strangely is?!) Very thought provoking stuff! It lifted what was otherwise a very dull day for me. Thankyou! Regards, N H Twine.
P.S. I`ve bought each and every movie you`ve reviewed on OOTP! I don`t mind the expense and effort (hunting down a Region 2 version of "The Set-Up" was a challenge! [I have an Italian version that includes an English soundtrack]) but please strive to keep up the quality. "His Kind of Woman" was absolutely dire!!
P.P.S On the other hand, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "Ice Harvest" and "Brick" were revelations. So, to quote Allan Sherman, "Muddah, Fadduh, kindly disregard dis letter!"

To be totally off topic...
the Region 1 copy of The Set-Up is way too bright. I understand the R2 version is nice and murky - the way it was intended

Hi Steve-O, I`ve no complaints on the quality front but, "Stasera Ho Vinto Anch`io" does look a bit incongrous nestled amongst my other DVD`s. Regards, Pepe
