The Ice Harvest (2005)

Wow. I like this movie. I've been avoiding watching it for a couple of years - but it turned out to be pretty excellent.
here's the podcast for it: http://outofthepast.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=284722
I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet (I will tomorrow). I wonder if the book has the same upbeat feel-good ending? That's the only flaw to the film. Should have been more of a downer..
like having John Cusak die when he's hit by the trailer at the end. Then you'd have a film!
Steve, hate to disagree but I remember being highly disappointed after seeing this. I thought it had a laughable plot that wasn't executed well at all, considering the great talent on hand. The dude walking around at the end after a shotgun blast to the face really had me rolling. It had some good points as well, but just not enough.

I took the film as a comedy/noir so the silliness didn't bother me too much... until the end that is. Just stupid.

Not a big fan of Neo but after hearing C&E's podcast on this one a couple months ago I went out and obtained it in a swap. Still haven't got around to viewing it but it's inching it's way towards the top of the pile.

To respond to Steve's initial observation in the post: I think the book is fantastic, and the film is fairly faithful to Scott Phillips' novel. But the ending is the largest point of convergence, so I urge anyone who is interested in the Ice Harvest to read the book first, and then see the film. The film is really good once you have the read the book, a different take on the same story really. And the DVD has a wonderful author/screenwriters video, which is quite informative. The screenwriting team behind Ice Harvest are the same guys who worked on the under-rated Twilight.
But I prefer the ending in the novel to the ending in the film. And anyone who reads the books will appreciate more the "deleted" scenes on the DVD which include the original ending of the film that was faithful to Phillips book.

This one left me cold (sorry) when I first saw it in the theater, but subsequent viewings on cable have left me liking it more. I'm a Cusackophile(!) since seeing him in 'Better Off Dead' back in '85, and he always brings a nice quality to his perfs, this film no exception. Billy Bob lent strong support (and much humor) I thought, as did the criminally underappreciated Oliver Platt.
Nothing earth-shattering, but a solid low-key serio-comic-neo.

This is in my Top 100 movies. What makes the film great is the dialog and the moral ambivalence of John Cusack's character.
great scenes:
Cusack, Thornton & Quaid at the pier Cusack & Thornton by the Christmas tree Cusack & Platt - any of their scenes together
